As spring transitions into summer, May is one of the best months for outdoor adventures, coastal escapes, and mountain retreats. With mild temperatures, low humidity, and longer daylight hours, it’s the perfect time to explore destinations that hit the sweet spot between warm, sunny days and cool, comfortable nights. In this post we’ll examine the top 5 US destinations which often have perfect weather in May.
This month’s top picks include a mix of beach towns, high-elevation getaways, and scenic landscapes—each offering ideal weather and exciting activities. Whether you’re soaking up the sun along the California coast, road-tripping through the Arizona mountains, or exploring historic Saratoga Springs, these destinations boast average highs in the 70s, making them perfect for hiking, sightseeing, and enjoying the outdoors.
Methodology
For this blog post, I focused on areas in the United States where the average high temperature falls within the ideal range of 70°F to 74°F during May. Using the map below as a starting point, I analyzed individual climate stations to determine the average number of days within that range. While the results align with the map, some locations stand out more than others. In the West, areas with higher elevation or near the coast are closer to the perfect range. In the East, a goldilocks line forms from Nebraska to New Jersey. From this data, I selected the top five locations to feature in this post.
